Chapter 22
The Sad King
Never have I truly known what itâs like to belong,
Itâs like a song, happy yet joyous, but for me, foreign and wrong,
I donât look like the Akin, and donât fit in with the holders,
Yet despite how my blood boils, my heart, it just grows colder
Kaskara let out a scream, which released shockwaves that shattered windows, shook buildings, and made the crowd pass out. Moreover, the ground shook and cracked open. Out of the ravine, a large claw followed by another reached out and grabbed onto the ground.
An enormous white dragon pulled itself out. Ice shards covered its white body and shimmered in the daylight. Its screech let loose a large explosion of ice shards.
The force blasted both Anja and Masa away.
Upon landing, Anja grabbed at her chest. A large piece of ice had pierced her left lung. She breathed raggedly, as surprise turned into shock and fear.
At the same time, Masa, who had the fortune of being unharmed, was shaking himself back to his senses. A cry of pain from his left drew his attention. His eyes widened at Anjaâs condition. Quickly glancing over at the dragon, he noticed it wasnât fully awake, so he ran over to Anja, leaping over small cracks in the earth.
As he looked over her wounds, his mind screamed, âWhat the hell are you doing, just take her out!â
Before he could do anything, the ground shook again. The dragon was leaning over to allow Kaskara to mount it. She assessed her surroundings and locked eyes with Masa. She pointed her finger at him. The dragon grunted and began flapping its wings.
âDamn it! Youâve got to be kidding me!â
Without thinking, Masa scooped Anja up and sprinted for the city wall.
âWhy am I helping this woman? Iâm supposed to kill her!â
The dragon, still half-asleep, managed to tail them. Luckily, the arch of the northeast exit was in sight.
Seeing the northeast exit arch, Masa said, âWell, the dragon shouldnât be able to leave Lapetusâ limits. So, thereâs no way that thing can go outside the city barrier, right?! Oh shit! What about Mune?â
He shook his head.
âIâll figure that out later if I survive!â
Anja whispered hoarsely, âYou always talk to yourself?â
He laughed. âI finally figured out who you remind me of. With all this attitude just oozing from you, youâre just like Ashes, my dearly departed wife who was the queen of Warri, the fire kingdom. Well, personality-wise solely. She was pretty hot literally.â
Anjaâs eyebrow shot up. âSo, this is a family affair? Is that why your son, whoâs a girl now, is trying to kill us?â
âWell, no. See, thatâs my daughter, my sonâs twin who we thought died in the womb after being absorbed by her brother.â
âLooks like that didnât exactly happen.â
âYeah, she hates me. Go figure, maybe sheâs at that age, yâknow.â
Anja rolled her eyes. âYou are a strange one, assassin. As for surviving this, this shard in my chest isnât normal. Itâs sapping my energy. Every time I move, I get weaker. Looks like this dirty little trick runs in your family.
